NYC has now put all of its health inspections online in a really great searchable format. The criteria for scoring is certainly interesting and I love the transparency. BUT I got curious about what in my neighborhood got lots of violations and is STILL OPEN. This place Beast that I like, for instance, is still open,… Continue reading You might not want to read this.

Starting today, you can sample and buy Harmless Harvest Coconut Water in your local Whole Foods store*. I had the pleasure of trying some today, and it was delicious! Google has a pretty great food program.
It’s free, it’s 24/7, it’s varied and delicious, and it’s supportive of health and environmental values. The only place on the campus where employees pay for food is from a vending machine. The pricing strategy is based on nutrient content, again according to the Harvard pyramid plan. For the vended products, you pay: one cent per… Continue reading Google has a pretty great food program.
The Dominican passion for sharing food extends to more than just hospitality; even the poorest Dominicans are able to sacrifice what little they have in order to feed a stranger. One family with whom I have grown close lives in a small tin hut in a crowded community. When I asked the mother if I… Continue reading
Good job on the new mandatory cigarette warning labels, FDA. The more graphic while maintaining truth, the better. Like with any advertising, imagery sticks, and especially for younger smokers, it’s more powerful than just words. Plus, they provide a number to help a smoker quit so nobody’s left staring at an image asking ‘what now?’
I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with. If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care. Check out the trailer for a new film by Mary Mazzio called The Apple Pushers. It’s an absolutely phenomenal exploration of the intersection of immigrant entrepreneurship, obesity, and access to fresh fruits and vegetables through compelling characters and thoughtful storytelling. You can like it on Facebook, too, and check back here for the website that’s… Continue reading
Social Media + Philanthropy = (xx OR xy)
A recently published study shows that men and women give differently both in their motivations and in their categories of support. Big surprise that women give more to breast cancer and bullying and men give more to prostate cancer and the Tea Party, and that everyone feels cause fatigue when they’re hit over the head… Continue reading Social Media + Philanthropy = (xx OR xy)
A few thoughts about blurb from the morning Metro: My radio show with Steve was Instant Coffee. I bet that made people hallucinate, too. Who are these students? How old are they? How many of the hallucinations involved Churchill? Are British people aliens, or just possibly a little off their rockers anyway? I’m proud to… Continue reading
Fat Tax!
It feels completely wrong even though the idea of health responsibility is completely fair. But, how can we penalize lower income families (yes, that’s a ‘risk factor’ for obesity) when they can’t afford it as easily AND have lower access to health and health care?! Also, how will tax authorities know who to tax… health… Continue reading Fat Tax!
