I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with. If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care.

Richard James Verone, who robbed a bank for $1 in hopes of getting health care from the prison system. Even crazier to me is that he’s actually now in jail. Even though he (says he) did this for personal medical care reasons, I think there’s a broader statement made here, and that’s that the perception (reality?) of the consequences of committing a crime can POSITIVELY outweigh the cost of committing the crime. In many cases actually, yes, I think that may be a reality. The prison system provides food, clothing, healthcare, protection, and shelter, which is more than a lot of people have, and if stealing $1 gets you all of that, sign me up.
