The Permanent Disruption of Social Media

Social media has chipped away at the foundation of traditional donor-engagement models. A new study highlights the realities of donor behavior and how organizations can redesign their outreach strategies to be more effective.

Fantastic article. Nonprofits and those involved with fundraising, please take the time to read and reflect on how you can reshape strategies for helping your cause.

An excerpt that I really like is the below graphic and accompanying explanation. Organizations on whole need to move towards a vortex model to maximize internal resources and outward impact, but they can’t forget the pyramid model, either.

YouTube Seeks to Improve Nonprofit Videos

YouTube in recent weeks has turned its focus to helping nonprofits create more powerful, effective videos, with a new “playbook” guide and a chance to participate in a one-day video boot camp in San Francisco.

The free 24-page guide, “YouTube for Good,” helps nonprofits devise attention-grabbing names and code their videos’ descriptions to make them more visible to search engines, tell better stories, and use video as part of  broad campaign.

This is excellent. It drives me nuts when organizations have amazing tools at their fingertips but don’t use them well; this is a wonderful effort that both makes YouTube a more accessible tool to nonprofits and also improves YouTube’s brand from being just the source of LOL videos.

Brands Want Content Curator Jobs

Neat article on a very important emerging type of marketing. I’d like to think of myself as a content curator with this blog, and might like to do more of it in the future. It’s fun to think about the dual goals of giving an audience what they want to read and giving an audience what you (the brand) want them to read. If I can better curate content that will keep you coming back, do pass along your suggestions.

Free Wi-Fi in NYC for New Year's Eve

Good marketing move, Skype.

NYC government, this would be a great service to have generally. What would be the cost? Households would save +$400 per year, and businesses/institutions could pay in a nominal amount to the citywide plan. Just thinking big.

This little girl sees through the marketing ploys; why can’t the rest of America?

The only pink thing I own is my toolkit, which at least has some merging between traditional gender stereotypes. But, it’s still not there, and let’s be honest, it was gifted to me in lieu of a ‘normal’ toolbox because it was pink.

Gendered socialization is far from being changed, and it’s the job of families, the education system, and businesses to improve it. It’s important to keep working on because it’s unequal and makes those who don’t follow the normal lines of consumer consumption automatically outliers. This girl knows it, you know it, I know it; being an outlier isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s often not good, especially as kids are growing up and bullying happens at the slightest differences. Do we want cookie-cutter kids? No. Do we want kids to feel comfortable making individual choices without ridicule? I should hope so. The current marketing and consumption patterns don’t really allow for that, but hopefully, it can begin moving in the right direction.

I want WAN!

The product is funny; the pictures on the website (including below) are funnier. WAN (a Wrap-a-Nap) is a pillow, a blindfold, and an earmuff all in one. This is something my mom would like for sure, but something I can’t really imagine anyone sincerely owning. But hey, it has fans! I suppose I can’t knock it til I try it!

Samsung is doing a really cool marketing campaign where they’re letting loose paper airplanes from space, which all have memory cards in them. Look out!
