How to: Pay the Bill, in a group (no whining, no...
So you’re out to dinner with more than just two people. The bill-pay is going to be a pain, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips to make it go a little more smoothly… Ask everyone to bring cash ahead of time. Even if one or two people forget, it’s much easier to use 1 or 2 cards than 5 or 6. With 6 or less people, it’s sometimes appropriate to pay for what...

Brilliant idea.
If I convinced just 100 friends to give me $5, I could buy an ipad. So that’d be cool. Now I just have to think of something I could sell for $5 and make it happen for real. Because I really want one.

I hosted a Nomad; here's what he said about it.
via the Nomad (Ed’s) blog (not same as his tumblr). The NYC Nomad in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (On Prospect Place) March 26, 2011 Stayed With Jen, a fellow (younger) Tufts Jumbo who met my good friend and former host Pauline at an event.  As it was described to me, they were sitting on a comfortable couch together and someone started talking about couches. Naturally, Pauline started...

Did you know....
Tax day this year is Monday, April 18 instead of Friday, April 15. Why? Emancipation Day falls on Saturday, April 16, but it is observed in D.C. on Friday, April 15. So, the IRS to extended the tax filing deadline because under the tax code, filing deadlines can’t fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. So, you have an extra weekend to file this year, and you have to move the tax party to...

Social Media as News Platform...Watch Out! →
Good thoughts and an important reminder about having a discerning eye when consuming media (you’re doing it right now). It’s always scary to me that people don’t look at sources or ask important questions about unsupported information. Be saavy, people. And education activists, is there anything being done to teach media smarts to kids in elementary school? Just as important as a...

Women are getting their brew on
Great post on chef Marcus Samuelsson’s blog about women who brew beer. I support Project Venus! Craft beer has been a boy’s club, but now, women are beginning to break into the industry. Women still remain a small presence in the brewing community—their influence, however, is growing, and beer’s glass ceiling has been cracked. Megan Parisi, Whitney Thompson, and Laura Ulrich, three...

Status Message Saturation (3.22.2011)
Preceptor’s parting words: “Good luck with the rest of your careers … and it’s still not too late to get out of medicine.” Wow.  Didn’t realize part of my job would involve accommodations for deaf clients. anyone looking for short term room to rent on St. Marks Place in East Village? im me for...

SeamlessWeb does it again.
@SeamlessWeb never fails to impress me with their do-good initiatives. It’s amazing how easy it is for companies to help out in their own way at quite little cost, and drive business at the same time. I did my once-a-week lunch order today because I knew money would go to to the UNICEF Tap Project in honor of World Water Week… $.26 for 5 orders each is $1, 50 is $10, and 5000 is $1000....

No day but TODAY
The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation that would shut down the Corporation for National and Community Service. If this bill were to become law it would eliminate AmeriCorps, Learn & Serve, Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions and the other service programs. The Senate has been debating the budget all week, but the legislators have failed to make much headway because...

All the Buildings in New York →
James Gulliver Hancock is an illustrator who’s attempting to draw every single building in NYC. Seems ambitious and a little redundant to me, but some of the drawings are pretty nifty. Also, I can’t really get past a name like that….wow.

Friendly Reminder: Daylight Savings Time
Before you go to bed tonight, set your clocks ahead one hour. #SpringAhead, as they say. I’m losing an hour of dreaming about my life set on Mars, probably. What are you losing an hour of?

Most exhilarating NYC moment yet: the pedicab ride
Mission: get from work to New Haven at a reasonable hour to take my brother out for a birthday dinner. Problem 1: 25 minute walk with a heavyish bag and bad back is a bad idea Problem 2: subways have been messed up and would have involved a transfer Problem 3: midtown You can’t catch a cab in midtown on a Friday at 5. I tried for 10 minutes and failed horribly. 5 more minutes. The train...

NEW location based-storytelling website →
The wonderful Tom Schillue included this link to Broadcastr in his newsletter, and I’m psyched about it. Anyone with a computer can record, categorize, and share their geographically-tied story, and also listen to thousands of other stories found at random or through an easy topic search. As much as I love other storytelling venues like The Moth and There You Are, the local twist really does...

Subway Seating Courtesy: a double-edged sword
With my now 2 week old bad back but generally ‘healthy’ appearance, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about who’s entitled to sit on the subway. If you’re clearly pregnant, or on crutches, or blind, people will often be quite generous and offer a seat. Even if they don’t, there’s a very visual reason why you would be “entitled” to one if you...

Awesome social game design opportunity!
I’d love to partner with anyone out there who wants to work on an idea…I have a few myself but it takes a team to really elevate and finesse ideas into a solid piece of work. The essence: design a real-world game that will leave a real and positive impact on NYC. See below for the full concept. The Come Out & Play Festival and Games for Change are excited to announce a joint call...

A year ago today
New years isn’t the only time to reflect. March 7, 2011. A year ago today… I had just gotten back from the Dominican Republic visiting and traveling with some amazing women who will be life long friends who are doing amazing things. My job was pretty busy, but also pretty good, and I got along with most of my coworkers, and was interested in what I was doing. I was dating someone...

Do y'all know who Michael Kutcher (@mkutch) is?
He’s Ashton Kutcher’s twin brother, who does great lobbying on behalf of Reach for the Stars for cerebral palsy funding. But what’s sad is that every interview with him is somehow framed around Ashton (and I just did it in this post). I’m an AK fan and all, but doesn’t that just seem wrong to talk about one sibling’s important efforts in the context or (even...

Cool talk by Michael Pawlin about using nature’s smarts in architecture. It’s pretty fascinating how plant cells, for instance, could directly influence structural design and closed systems. Basically, I’m intrigued. More here.
