Have you ever been to Extra Place?
It’s just like Platform 9 3/4 - hidden in plain sight. See? Right now, there’s some really cool art and Oaxaca, so I’m all for this hidden gem. Check it out! Situated between the Bowery and 2nd Avenue, Extra Place is a former thru street that once connected East 1st Street to East 2nd Street. In the 1800s, Philip Minthorne divided his farmland between his sons and...

Single Lady Brags About Using Match.com to Get... →
Jen Doll hits the nail on the head again. This really ticks me off…. I’m all for dating on 1,000 levels, but not to be a gold-digger. Get real, ladies. Sure, a free meal sometimes is nice (especially in good company), but your monthly budget shouldn’t be based on dates, and I would hope that it’s not assumed that your date needs to pay. Business Insider today writes of a...

Should Philanthropies Operate Like Businesses? →
This article provides a nice (albeit biased, I think) set of arguments both for and against the philanthropy as a business model. I tend to agree with Bronfman and Solomon, with the explicit acknowledgement of and appreciation for business models as being flexible and varied. Philanthropies need to be as well. What do you think?

Rentrepreneurship
noun. 1) Creatively making quick money by hiring out personal belongings. 2) A contributor to collaborate consumption. 3) A smart business idea. Call me crazy, but this makes a ton of sense. I don’t have the energy to do it personally (yet), but I’m intrigued. It’s a good read regardless. It’s also written by Rob Baedeker of Kasper Hauser fame, so we can assume this...

Millennials with Gumption
I recently had the pleasure of attending two sessions at the Mobilize.org Millennial Summit with ~100 other Millennials with do-gooder visions and pragmatic solutions. Some, like Daniel, Mike, and Lana, already are making a huge dent in leading our generation to make giving a habit with substantial impact, and others like Marc, who have done some neat stuff, are continuing to become scholars in...

Inviting Submissions for New Blog Title!
If I ever want to blog to scale (which surprise! I do.), I need to shape up. I don’t want to change my content (at least on this blog) because I like the mix of NYC, philanthropy, taxes, humor, snippets of thought, sociology, DIY tips, and photography, but “my masterpiece, v1.0” doesn’t sound as good as it once did. I’m looking for ideas, loyal readers, so please...

Why Millennial Women are Burning Out at Work by 30 →
Not the most uplifting post, but I agree with the author and appreciate her raw points. Well worth a read, but heads up that there might be a pit in your stomach after. Make sure to read the comments, too.

9 Skills Needed to Be a Super-Connector →
Interesting blog post, though I have a few thoughts about / additions to it. Being a connector certainly is all of these things, but when there isn’t sincere interest in what you’re doing or the people you’re connecting, you can’t be an effective connector in the long term because people stop buying into it. How can you make each connection genuine? It’s also...

Social Media Increases Alumni Engagement more than... →
The Thunderbird School of Global Management enjoyed a 400 percent increase in the number of donors – many of them alumni – to its annual end-of-fiscal-year campaign 2010. Everything they did that year was the same, with one exception – Thunderbird had a small team of social media managers creating and monitoring conversations with the school’s supporters for about a year leading up to the...

An excerpt: Jobs & The Economy Only workers with at least a BA degree saw earnings increase over the last generation Median earnings for young African-Americans are 75% of the earnings of whites; 68% for Latinos Young women earn less than men at every level of education. OPPORTUNITY INDEX
This new metric has just been launched by Opportunity Nation, the second nation campaign from Be The Change launching this weekend from New York. The campaign seeks to enhance opportunity and economic mobility in America, and this Opportunity Index is an innovative benchmarking and comparison tool that will certainly empower communities to do better. Check it out and do share your thoughts!

Frat house?
Roommate: Hey, you know what's weird? Next door got a TON of food delivered. The truck was there unloading boxes for at least half an hour.
Me: That's crazy. But yea, I guess they host a lot of dinner parties; it's still a lot though.
Roommate: It's like a fraternity, or something.
Me: You never know, I suppose!
*later*
Roommate: So, turns out I wasn't too far off.
Me: How so?
Roommate: It's a half way house!
[note: I knew this. But, in my head, we were talking about the 3 girls who are immediately next door to me and not the building over. oops!]
